Diarrhea can become a severe health problem and lead to death if not taken care of. Diarrhea leads to dehydration, which is the cause for maximum deaths because it sets in very fast. As soon as you get to know that your child is suffering from diarrhea or dehydration, without delaying you should give him Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) & Zinc Tablets and then you should consult a doctor.

People do not realize the severity of diarrhea because of the lack of awareness, which often leads to admission in hospital or death.

Let us know how they Work.

Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS): –

Content:  ORS contains glucose that helps to hydrate the body and salts that increases the level of electrolytes.

Dosage: Diarrhea causes dehydration, which is a lack of water and electrolytes in an infant’s body. ORS contains glucose and electrolytes, which hydrates the body and fills for the electrolytes lost. ORS comes in different packaging and it should be made according to the instruction given behind the package. Every time the baby stools, he/she should be given ORS to hydrate the body. If your baby is vomiting after taking ORS, he should be consulted to a doctor immediately.

ZINC Tablets: –

Zinc Tablets are given to the baby to improve the condition of their gut. Because of weak gut baby’s body often cannot absorb all the nutrients, which also makes their immunity low and expose them to pneumonia.

Dosage: Zinc tablets should not be given to infants below two months. ½ tablets should be given to children of 2 to 6months of age and 1 tablet should be given to children above 6 months to 60months. If your baby does not like the taste of zinc, it can also be given mixed with ORS, but it should not be mixed with large quantities. 2/3 spoons of ORS are enough to dissolve 1 Zinc tablet.

They are 14 tablets in one pack and should be given every day until the course is finished. The course longs for 14 days. The course should not be stopped even after the stools have stopped because it reduces the chances of pneumonia and admitting the infant in a hospital.

Dr Vinod Kumar Anand on how to deal with diarrhea in children

Zinc and ORS should be given together and in the required amount. People often promote one over the other but that will not complete the treatment.

If your child consumed more than one tablet by mistake, he/she would probably vomit them, but if not, you should consult to doctor for help. Zinc can be given with other medicines, and it will not harm your child’s health. ORS and Zinc tablets are the best combinations that will help your infant to regain his healthy body by fighting diarrhea.
